Lyons, IL (November 18, 2024) – A tragic two-vehicle collision on the Stevenson Expressway early Saturday morning claimed the life of a Romeoville man, Amarildo Ponce, 53, according to Illinois State Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The crash occurred just before 1:30 a.m. on the southbound Interstate 55 near First Avenue. Authorities reported that Ponce was driving a Honda Civic in the center lane when it collided with a Subaru SUV traveling beside it. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Ponce sustained severe injuries in the collision and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead approximately 50 minutes later. An autopsy conducted Sunday confirmed that Ponce died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the crash. The second driver’s condition has not been disclosed.
