Lubbock, TX (December 16, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision on Interstate 27 near County Rd 5100 claimed the lives of two individuals early Sunday morning. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed the crash occurred at approximately 6:05 a.m.
According to DPS, Samantha Alwan, 29, was driving one of the vehicles involved and was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. The other driver, a male whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Vehicle 2, driven by the unidentified male, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-27. Vehicle 1, driven by Alwan, was traveling northbound in the left lane when the two vehicles collided head-on. The impact caused Vehicle 2 to catch fire, further complicating the scene.
Authorities are working to determine the factors leading to the crash, including why the second vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction. The investigation remains ongoing as troopers continue to gather evidence and confirm the identity of the male driver.
