Louisville, KY (February 16, 2025) – A multi-vehicle accident involving three tour buses on Interstate 71 left eight people injured Sunday morning. The crash occurred around 9 a.m. near mile marker 7.5 at Barbour Lane, leading to significant traffic disruptions and emergency response efforts.
Authorities reported that a jackknifed semi-truck further north on I-71 created a traffic backup, which contributed to the crash. Three charter buses traveling together were unable to stop in time, causing a chain-reaction collision. The third bus slid into the second, pushing it into a passenger vehicle and the first bus.
Two adults and six children sustained injuries, though all are expected to recover. The buses were transporting members of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s Honors Band, Orchestra, and Choir to a musical event at Ohio State University. Four students and a director were transported to a Louisville hospital for further evaluation.
Replacement buses were sent to assist the remaining passengers, while other buses that were not involved in the crash returned to Evansville. Police also responded to another crash at mile marker 8.6 near the Gene Snyder Freeway, where at least one vehicle was involved.
Officials are urging drivers to use extreme caution due to hazardous road conditions.
How Winter Road Conditions Contribute to Multi-Vehicle Pileups
Winter weather and icy roads can significantly increase the likelihood of multi-vehicle crashes, particularly on high-speed interstates where reaction times are crucial. Sudden stops, black ice, and limited visibility make it difficult for drivers to navigate safely, especially when large commercial vehicles and buses are involved.
Recent studies show that nearly a quarter of all crashes in winter conditions result from reduced traction, causing vehicles to slide into each other. Jackknifed semi-trucks, like the one involved in this crash, can create sudden bottlenecks, leaving little room for vehicles behind them to stop in time. Large buses, which require greater stopping distances, are particularly vulnerable in these situations.
Drivers should remain cautious by reducing speed, keeping extra distance between vehicles, and avoiding sudden lane changes. Staying updated on road conditions and delaying unnecessary travel during hazardous weather can also prevent collisions.
Victims of highway crashes may have legal options to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages. Understanding these rights is essential for those recovering from accident-related injuries.
