Louisville, KY (November 12, 2024) – A serious crash involving at least five vehicles, including three commercial dump trucks, brought Interstate 65 South to a standstill near University Blvd and Arthur St early Tuesday morning. Louisville Metro Police and Fire & Rescue teams responded to the accident, which occurred around 5:30 a.m. at Mile Marker 133.
Initial reports indicate that the collision began with two passenger vehicles. Both drivers reportedly fled the scene, one on foot and the other picked up by a southbound vehicle. Witnesses could not confirm whether they were injured in the crash.
The secondary impact involved three commercial dump trucks, which had little time to avoid the initial wreckage. This led to a chain reaction that severely injured one of the truck drivers. Louisville Fire & Rescue successfully extricated the driver, who was rushed to UofL Hospital for emergency surgery. The other truck drivers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene by EMS.
All lanes and shoulders of I-65 South were closed for several hours, causing miles-long traffic delays during the morning commute. Authorities have since reopened the roadway, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the events leading up to the crash. Our thoughts are with the injured parties, and we wish them a swift and complete recovery.
