Los Angeles, CA (January 19, 2025) – An 87-year-old woman tragically lost her life after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in the Echo Park neighborhood on Monday evening. The crash occurred around 6:50 p.m. at the intersection of Berkeley Ave and Allesandro St, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

Authorities report that the woman was walking westbound at the intersection when the driver of a dark-colored Ford Transit van, traveling southbound on Allesandro St, struck her. The driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid or provide information to authorities. Tragically, the elderly woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been publicly released.

The LAPD continues to investigate the incident but, as of Saturday, no information regarding a potential suspect has been made available. Our hearts go out to the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time.

Fatal Hit-and-Run Accidents in California

California, particularly urban areas like Los Angeles, experiences a high number of hit-and-run accidents annually. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, pedestrians account for a significant portion of fatalities in traffic collisions, with elderly individuals being especially vulnerable.

Hit-and-run drivers who leave the scene of an accident face severe legal consequences, including potential felony charges. Such actions not only violate the law but also deny victims timely medical assistance that could save lives. Drivers are urged to stop, render aid, and cooperate with law enforcement when involved in a collision, as these steps can make a critical difference in the aftermath of an accident.

Local authorities continue efforts to reduce pedestrian fatalities through safety campaigns, improved crosswalks, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws. However, pedestrians should remain cautious when crossing intersections, even in designated areas, to help ensure their safety.
