Linn County, OR (December 24, 2024) – A tragic two-car crash at the intersection of Highway 20 and Highway 22 claimed the life of one teenager and left several others injured. The collision occurred on December 23, involving a westbound Toyota Highlander and an eastbound Hyundai Accent.

According to Oregon State Police, the driver of the Toyota Highlander attempted to turn left onto Highway 20, crossing into the path of the Hyundai Accent and causing a severe head-on crash. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, where multiple victims required urgent medical attention.

The driver of the Hyundai, Maryssa Swiderski, and a 15-year-old passenger were airlifted to a local hospital. Tragically, the 15-year-old succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival. Two other passengers in the Hyundai, both teenagers aged 17 and 15, sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital by ground ambulance.

In the Toyota Highlander, the driver, Victor Hernandez Triana, and passengers Kathy Hernandez and Bertha Santana Longoria suffered minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital. A third passenger, Maria Triana De Hernandez, sustained serious injuries and was also hospitalized.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, including the circumstances surrounding the Toyota’s left turn. Traffic delays in the area have since cleared, but the community mourns the tragic loss of life and prays for the recovery of the injured.

The Risks of Left-Turn Accidents in Oregon

Left-turn accidents, like the one at the intersection of Highway 20 and Highway 22, are among the most dangerous types of collisions. These crashes often occur when drivers misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming vehicles or fail to yield the right of way. In Oregon, rural highways can pose additional risks due to higher speeds and limited visibility.

Data from state transportation agencies highlight the dangers of left-turn maneuvers, particularly at busy intersections without traffic signals or dedicated turn lanes. Preventing such accidents requires heightened awareness, adherence to traffic laws, and, where possible, infrastructure improvements.

Victims of left-turn accidents often face significant physical and emotional challenges. From immediate medical treatment to long-term recovery, the road ahead can be difficult. If you or someone you love has been involved in a collision, understanding your legal options and seeking support is vital.
