Linn County, IA (March 7, 2025) – A head-on collision caused by icy road conditions sent one driver to the hospital Thursday morning.

According to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of Mt. Vernon Road and Hokes Way. Officials say a Chevy Malibu lost control on the slick roadway, veered over the center line, and collided with a Toyota Sienna. Both vehicles ended up in a ditch due to the impact.

Emergency responders worked to free the driver of the Toyota Sienna, who was then transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the Sienna was uninjured. The driver of the Malibu was cited for failure to maintain control.

Authorities continue to warn drivers to be cautious when traveling in winter weather conditions.

Our thoughts are with those injured, we hope they recover swiftly.

Winter Weather and Car Accidents in Iowa

Iowa’s winter road conditions can be extremely hazardous, increasing the risk of crashes like the one on Mt. Vernon Road. Ice and snow significantly reduce traction, making it more difficult for drivers to stop, turn, or maintain control of their vehicles.

Head-on collisions on icy roads often occur when a vehicle slides over the center line, leaving little time for other drivers to react. In many cases, black ice—an invisible layer of ice on the road—can catch drivers off guard, leading to dangerous situations.

To prevent winter-related crashes, authorities recommend:

  • Reducing speed and allowing extra braking distance
  • Using winter tires for better traction
  • Avoiding sudden acceleration or hard braking
  • Staying updated on road conditions before traveling
