Lexington Park, MD (February 10, 2025) – A woman is dead following a rear-end collision in Lexington Park on Sunday afternoon, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 2:29 p.m. near the Crossroads Apartments in the 21000 block of Great Mills Road. Patrol deputies and emergency medical personnel responded swiftly to reports of the accident.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered a two-vehicle collision involving a 2015 Nissan Armada and a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 59-year-old Kathy Mae Davis of Lexington Park, was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from her vehicle.

A preliminary investigation revealed that both vehicles were traveling in lane two of Great Mills Road toward Westbury Boulevard when the Nissan, driven by 20-year-old Zykera Sharnae Shubrooks-Nunley of Lexington Park, struck the rear of Davis’s vehicle. The impact forced the Chevrolet into a telephone pole, causing it to overturn and eject Davis.

Shubrooks-Nunley was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. The extent of her injuries has not been disclosed.

The St. Mary’s County Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash, with preliminary findings suggesting that speed and driver error were contributing factors. Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the collision or events leading up to it to contact Corporal Jason Smith.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Kathy Mae Davis during this difficult time.

Rear-End Collisions and Road Safety in Maryland

Rear-end collisions, like the tragic accident on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, are among the most common types of car crashes and can have devastating consequences, particularly when high speeds are involved. In this case, the force of the impact not only caused the victim’s vehicle to hit a telephone pole but also led to a fatal ejection, highlighting the severe risks associated with such collisions.

Rear-end accidents can occur for various reasons, including distracted driving, speeding, following too closely, or sudden braking. In Maryland, and across the U.S., adhering to safe driving practices such as maintaining proper following distances and staying within speed limits is crucial in preventing these types of accidents.

In cases where a rear-end collision results in a vehicle overturning or an occupant being ejected, the severity of injuries increases significantly. While seatbelt use greatly reduces the risk of ejection, the violent nature of certain crashes can still lead to tragic outcomes, as seen in this incident.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that speed and driver error played a role in this crash, emphasizing the importance of responsible driving, especially in areas with residential traffic or complex road layouts like Great Mills Road.

If you or a loved one has been affected by a rear-end collision or any other type of traffic accident in Maryland, seeking both medical care and legal guidance is essential. Understanding your rights can help you navigate the recovery process, especially when dealing with injuries, insurance claims, or potential legal proceedings.
