Leroy Township, OH (January 7, 2025) – A tragic vehicle collision involving an Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) snow plow claimed the life of a Cleveland man Monday afternoon. The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) confirmed details of the incident on Tuesday.

The crash occurred just after 3 PM on I-90 in Leroy Township. Authorities reported significant slowdowns on the eastbound highway as emergency crews responded to the scene. The ODOT worker, who was operating the snow plow along the south side berm, was not injured in the incident.

According to OSHP, the crash took place when the driver of a KIA, identified as 56-year-old Allen Anderson of Cleveland, veered off the roadway and collided with the back of the snow plow. The impact caused the KIA to end up in a grassy median. Anderson was initially transported to University Hospitals Tri-Point Medical Center for treatment but was later transferred to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators noted that Anderson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Additionally, they stated that neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have played a role in the incident. This marks the 15th crash involving a state snow plow during the current winter season in Ohio. Last year, 22 ODOT trucks were struck by vehicles during snow-clearing operations.

Snow Plow Safety and Winter Driving in Ohio

Winter driving in Ohio presents unique challenges, particularly on highways like I-90, which often experience heavy snowfall and icy conditions. Collisions involving snow plows are unfortunately common, as these vehicles operate in dangerous weather to maintain road safety.

Ohio drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant and maintain a safe distance from snow plows. These vehicles often move at slower speeds and may have limited visibility. When navigating winter roads, drivers should also avoid distractions, reduce speed in icy conditions, and ensure seatbelts are worn at all times.

The tragic loss of Allen Anderson highlights the importance of these precautions and the need for increased awareness during winter months. Ohio authorities continue to promote winter driving safety campaigns to reduce the frequency of such accidents.
