Lenexa, KS (February 26, 2025) – A driver suffered serious injuries after his vehicle was t-boned by a semi-truck on a K-10 exit ramp in Lenexa on Tuesday afternoon. The crash occurred just after 4:50 p.m. on the eastbound K-10 ramp to southbound I-35, near Santa Fe Trail Dr.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 20-year-old Emilio Rios of Kansas City, Kansas, was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang down the ramp when he changed lanes at high speed. His vehicle rear-ended a 2014 Nissan Altima driven by Eric Nelson, 42, of Lawrence. Following the initial impact, the Mustang veered off the road to the left, struck a crash attenuator, and rebounded back into the roadway, where it was t-boned on the driver’s side by a 2020 Peterbilt semi-truck driven by Macrey Mshana, 42, of Spring Hill.
Emergency crews transported Rios to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Authorities confirmed that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Nelson and Mshana were unharmed in the incident. The crash remains under investigation, and no further details have been released.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim, and we hope for his full recovery.
The Dangers of High-Speed Lane Changes and Highway Collisions
Accidents on highway exit ramps often result in severe injuries due to high speeds, abrupt lane changes, and limited maneuverability. The K-10 ramp to I-35 is a heavily traveled roadway where traffic congestion and merging vehicles increase the risk of collisions.
Lane-changing at high speeds can be particularly dangerous, as it reduces reaction time and increases the likelihood of losing control of the vehicle. In this crash, the secondary collision with a semi-truck significantly worsened the impact, demonstrating the dangers of high-speed highway incidents.
Drivers can take steps to minimize risks by slowing down while merging, checking blind spots before lane changes, and always wearing seatbelts to reduce injury severity in the event of a crash. Commercial truck drivers also play a crucial role in roadway safety by maintaining safe distances and remaining aware of smaller vehicles in their path.
