The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) reported that the crash occurred just after 5 p.m. northwest of Bonner Springs, prompting a full highway closure for several hours.
According to KHP, the crash began when a 17-year-old driver from Topeka attempted to pass a 53-year-old driver from Kansas City, Kansas, in the left lane. Her three passengers, including another 17-year-old, a 15-year-old, and a baby girl under one year old, were not injured. All occupants were properly restrained. The 53-year-old driver of a 2024 Isuzu suffered injuries and was transported to a hospital in Kansas City. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The 54-year-old driver of a 2019 Infiniti X50 sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized. His passenger, 50-year-old Lili McCann of Kansas City, Missouri, tragically succumbed to her injuries at a hospital approximately two hours after the crash. Officials confirmed that McCann’s next of kin had been notified, and an investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
