Lawrence County, MO (January 24, 2025) – A freak accident involving a hay bale on MO 174, approximately eight miles east of Mt. Vernon, left a young passenger injured Thursday afternoon. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, which occurred at approximately 2:05 p.m.
According to reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2008 Ford F-350 driven by a 51-year-old man from Mt. Vernon, MO, lost a hay bale while traveling westbound. The hay bale struck an eastbound 2018 Toyota Corolla, causing significant damage to the vehicle. The Toyota Corolla was towed from the scene due to the extent of the damage.
A 19-year-old female passenger in the Toyota Corolla, a resident of Republic, MO, sustained injuries in the incident. She was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Aurora, MO, for treatment. The driver of the Toyota Corolla, a 19-year-old male also from Republic, MO, was reportedly uninjured, and both occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. The Ford F-350 was able to be driven from the scene, and no injuries were reported for its driver.
