Fire Safety in Maryland
House fires continue to be a major public safety concern, particularly in the winter months when heating equipment and electrical usage increase. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home fires account for a significant portion of fire-related fatalities in the United States, with common causes including faulty wiring, unattended cooking, and heating appliance malfunctions.
In Maryland, officials recommend that homeowners and renters take proactive steps to reduce fire risks by:
- Installing and testing smoke alarms regularly
- Having an emergency escape plan with at least two exit routes
- Avoiding overloaded electrical outlets and checking for frayed cords
- Keeping flammable materials away from heating sources
In the wake of this tragedy, local fire departments encourage residents to review their fire prevention plans and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones.
