Lathrop, MO (November 9, 2024) – A devastating three-vehicle collision involving two semi-trucks and a pickup left two individuals with life-threatening injuries on Friday morning. The crash occurred around 10:15 a.m. on I-35 near Missouri Highway 116, east of Lathrop.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a northbound 2024 Volvo semi-truck collided with a 1999 Ford F-250 and a 2025 Freightliner Cascadia on the interstate. Investigators revealed that the Freightliner and the pickup had slowed for traffic when the Volvo semi-truck rear-ended the pickup. The force of the impact caused the Ford F-250 to skid off the road, flip over, and come to rest on the shoulder. The Volvo then struck the rear of the Freightliner’s towed unit.
Emergency responders found the driver of the pickup, a 69-year-old Lathrop man, and his passenger, a 59-year-old woman from Lathrop, suffering from life-threatening injuries. Both were rushed to Liberty Hospital for treatment. The 47-year-old driver of the Volvo semi-truck sustained minor injuries and was also transported to Liberty Hospital. The Freightliner’s driver, a 62-year-old man from Reinbeck, Iowa, was unharmed. Authorities confirmed that all parties involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Both the Volvo semi-truck and the Ford pickup were totaled, while the Freightliner sustained minor damage. Investigators are continuing to assess the factors that contributed to the collision.
Semi-Truck Accidents in Missouri
Missouri’s major highways, including I-35, are critical for commercial transportation but also see a high volume of semi-truck collisions. These accidents often result in severe injuries due to the significant size and weight disparities between vehicles.
Risks and Consequences of Semi-Truck Collisions
Multi-vehicle crashes involving semi-trucks are often catastrophic. Contributing factors may include driver fatigue, distracted driving, or inadequate following distance, as seen in this case. While seatbelt use likely prevented further fatalities, the immense forces involved in semi-truck crashes often result in severe injuries or fatalities.
