Lantana, FL (December 4, 2024) – A severe crash between a vehicle and a Brightline train occurred Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Hypoluxo Road and South Federal Highway in Lantana, resulting in significant traffic disruptions and one person needing to be extricated from their vehicle.
According to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, emergency responders worked quickly to free one person from a convertible that was severely damaged in the collision. The victim was then airlifted to a local hospital via Trauma Hawk, though their condition has not been released.
Local residents voiced concerns over the frequent danger at this intersection. Larry Parker, a nearby resident, mentioned hearing the crash while setting up Christmas lights at his home in the Half Moon Bay community. He expressed frustration over the frequent issue of vehicles getting stuck on the railroad tracks at the intersection, which often leads to dangerous situations. “People stop, they get on the tracks, they sit there… you think you’re never going to get off,” Parker remarked.
Data from the Department of Transportation reveals that Lantana has the fourth-highest number of Brightline crashes among South Florida cities. Seven of the 13 incidents in the area involved objects, including vehicles, being stopped on the railroad tracks, contributing to the high crash rate.
John Lloyd, also a resident of Half Moon Bay, shared his anger over the dangerous conditions at the intersection, noting that incidents like this hinder residents’ ability to move freely around their neighborhood. “Something needs to be done about it,” he said, highlighting the urgency of improving safety measures in the area.
Brightline has yet to respond to WPTV’s request for comment regarding the incident.
