Lansing, MI (November 3, 2024) – A tragic and fiery crash occurred late Saturday night, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to more than a dozen others. The incident took place around 11:40 p.m. on Interstate 96, near Webberville, approximately 25 miles southeast of Lansing.
According to reports from the Michigan State Police, troopers were already on the scene assisting with traffic control as a DTE Energy crew worked to string power lines across the interstate. As traffic was backed up near an overpass, a semi-truck driver was unable to stop in time, leading to a catastrophic collision with several vehicles. The impact caused the truck to catch fire, resulting in a chaotic scene involving 15 vehicles.
At the time of the crash, police had just reopened the interstate after temporarily halting traffic. The sudden collision created a devastating situation, with multiple vehicles igniting and causing significant damage.
Emergency medical services responded swiftly, transporting 17 individuals, all vehicle occupants, to local hospitals in Lansing for treatment of serious injuries. Unfortunately, four people were confirmed dead at the scene, and their identities have not yet been released pending notification of their families.
The Michigan State Police are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, while the Michigan Department of Transportation is set to inspect the overpass involved in the incident.
