Lakewood, WA (January 24, 2025) – A deadly wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 in Lakewood claimed the life of one driver and resulted in the arrest of a 17-year-old suspect on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI). The tragic incident occurred near milepost 122, close to the Lakewood south city limits.

According to Trooper John Dattilo with the Washington State Patrol, the crash involved a wrong-way driver who struck a red Honda head-on. The driver of the Honda, a woman whose identity has not yet been released, was tragically killed in the collision. The suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of DUI. Authorities confirmed that the suspect was not injured in the crash.

The crash prompted a large emergency response, including the Washington State Department of Transportation, Tacoma officials, and West Pierce Fire & Rescue. The road remained closed for several hours while officials conducted an investigation and cleared the scene.

Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the victim during this difficult time. We hope for justice and accountability as the investigation continues.

Wrong-Way Collisions in Washington

Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous types of vehicle accidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities due to the high speeds and force of impact involved. In Washington, incidents like the one on I-5 underscore the dangers of impaired driving and highlight the critical importance of roadway safety.

Alcohol or drug impairment is a common factor in wrong-way collisions. Young and inexperienced drivers are particularly susceptible to poor decision-making, making it crucial for parents, schools, and communities to emphasize the dangers of driving under the influence.

The aftermath of a fatal crash can leave families devastated, not only emotionally but also financially. Funeral costs, loss of income, and other expenses often weigh heavily on grieving families. It is vital for victims’ families to seek appropriate resources and support to navigate these challenges.
