Lakewood Township, MN (February 14, 2025) – An injury crash was reported early Friday morning on northbound Highway 61 near McQuade Rd in Lakewood Township, St. Louis County. The accident occurred at approximately 6:59 a.m. and involved two vehicles.

According to authorities, a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by 24-year-old Bret Erick Olson of Two Harbors, was traveling northbound when it slowed for a vehicle pulling over to the shoulder. As the Jetta continued past the stopped vehicle, it was rear-ended by a 2005 Kia Sedona traveling in the same direction. The Kia Sedona was driven by 50-year-old Stephen Allen Boen of Duluth.

Emergency responders, including St. Louis County officials, Duluth Township authorities, Clifton Fire, and Mayo Ambulance, arrived at the scene to assist. Olson sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Luke’s Duluth for treatment. Boen was not injured in the crash.

The road conditions were reported as dry at the time of the collision. No airbags were deployed in the Jetta, while the Kia Sedona’s airbags did deploy. Authorities confirmed that both drivers were wearing seat belts, and alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

The Minnesota State Patrol is currently investigating the incident.

Car Accidents in Minnesota

Minnesota sees thousands of vehicle collisions each year, particularly on major highways like Highway 61. Rear-end accidents are among the most common types of crashes, often resulting from sudden stops, distracted driving, or following too closely.

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, a significant number of injury crashes occur annually on highways, with many leading to hospitalization. While road conditions, weather, and driver attentiveness all play a role in preventing accidents, maintaining a safe following distance and being alert to changing traffic conditions are crucial in reducing the risk of collisions.

For those injured in a crash, dealing with medical expenses, lost wages, and recovery can be overwhelming. Seeking legal guidance can help victims understand their rights and explore options for financial compensation.
