Lake Worth, FL (January 31, 2025) – A tragic accident near Woodlands Middle School on Thursday afternoon claimed the life of one student and left another seriously injured. The crash occurred around 4 p.m. in Palm Beach County when two young bicyclists collided and fell into the roadway, where they were struck by a semi-truck.
According to a report from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, 13-year-old Landon Coggin and 12-year-old Elias Angel were riding on the shoulder of the road when they accidentally crashed into each other. The impact caused both boys to overturn onto the roadway and into the path of an oncoming truck.
Coggin suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Angel was rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Officials confirmed that the truck driver did not contribute to the cause of the crash.
Woodlands Middle School Principal expressed deep condolences in a message to parents, stating, “It is with great sadness I inform you that one of our students has died following an off-campus incident. Another student involved in the incident is currently in the hospital. I have been in touch with their families and will do what I can to provide support on behalf of our school community.”
Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Landon Coggin, and we wish Elias Angel a full recovery.
Bicycle Accidents in Florida
Florida consistently ranks among the most dangerous states for bicyclists, particularly in areas with high traffic volumes and limited bike infrastructure. Incidents involving young cyclists can be especially devastating, as children are more vulnerable to severe injuries in traffic accidents.
While drivers are required to exercise caution around bicyclists, accidents can still happen due to a variety of factors, including road design, limited visibility, and loss of control. Tragically, when large vehicles such as semi-trucks are involved, the outcome is often severe.
Ensuring bicycle safety for children requires improved infrastructure, including protected bike lanes, better lighting, and designated crossing areas. Parents and schools can also educate young riders on road safety, helmet use, and the importance of staying alert while cycling near traffic.
