Lake County, FL (January 20, 2025) – A single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning near Leesburg left one man dead and another injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

The incident occurred at approximately 2:26 AM at the intersection of County Rd 48 and County Rd 33. According to an FHP crash report, a sedan carrying two occupants — a 26-year-old driver and a 41-year-old passenger, both from Puerto Rico — was traveling eastbound on County Rd 48 when the driver failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection.

The vehicle veered off the roadway, became airborne over a ditch, struck a tree, and overturned. The passenger was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, while the driver sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized. Troopers believe the driver was the only occupant wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the collision. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those affected by this tragic accident.

Single-Vehicle Crashes in Florida

Single-vehicle accidents, like the crash at County Rd 48 and County Rd 33, are a frequent cause of fatalities and injuries across Florida’s roadways. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, intersections are high-risk areas for crashes, often involving stop sign violations, excessive speeds, or lack of attention.

In this case, failure to stop at the stop sign and loss of vehicle control led to the devastating outcome. Such incidents highlight the critical importance of adhering to traffic laws, especially at intersections. Drivers are reminded to reduce speeds, remain vigilant, and always wear seat belts to mitigate injury risks during accidents.

For those impacted by vehicle accidents, it’s essential to understand the resources available for assistance. Documenting the crash, seeking immediate medical care, and consulting with experts can aid in navigating the aftermath of such events.
