Lake County, FL (March 5, 2025) – A tragic wrong-way crash on State Road 33, south of County Road 474, claimed the life of a 27-year-old woman and left a 39-year-old man seriously injured early Wednesday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the collision occurred at approximately 12:58 a.m. when a 2004 GMC Sierra, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of SR-33, collided head-on with a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. The impact caused the GMC to overturn, while the Hyundai rotated counter-clockwise.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported the 39-year-old man, who was driving the GMC, to Osceola Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the Hyundai, a 27-year-old woman, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

At this time, authorities have not determined why the GMC was traveling the wrong way. The crash remains under investigation.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim, and we hope for a full recovery for the injured.

Wrong-Way Accidents in Florida

Wrong-way crashes, like the one on SR-33, are among the most dangerous types of collisions due to the high-impact force of head-on crashes. These accidents often occur due to driver impairment, fatigue, or confusion, especially on roads with minimal lighting or unclear signage.

According to state data, Florida sees hundreds of wrong-way crashes each year, many of which result in severe injuries or fatalities. High-speed roadways and rural highways, such as SR-33, can be particularly dangerous when a driver mistakenly enters the wrong lane.

For victims and their families, navigating the aftermath of a serious crash can be overwhelming. Seeking medical care, understanding insurance claims, and exploring legal options are critical steps following a major accident.
