Lafayette, WI (October 11, 2024) – A tragic motorcycle accident claimed the life of a dedicated firefighter on Thursday, October 10. Maxwell Bayer, 31, of Franksville, was involved in a collision between his motorcycle and another vehicle near Highway D and Townline Road, close to Alpine Valley.
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office reported that the Walworth County Communications Center received a 911 call about the crash just before 12:30 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies and responders from the East Troy Fire Department found Bayer in the northwest ditch at the scene. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at East Troy Municipal Airport before he could be airlifted for further treatment.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, a 17-year-old male from Eagle, Wisconsin, was unharmed and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Bayer was a respected member of both the Racine Fire Department and the Raymond Fire and Rescue Department. He was remembered as a beloved firefighter with a positive attitude and a contagious smile. Hired on March 9, 2023, Bayer quickly became part of the Hazardous Materials Response Team, demonstrating eagerness to learn and assist his colleagues.
“He was an excellent firefighter and EMT, but an even better person,” stated the Racine Fire Department. They highlighted Bayer’s commitment to off-duty volunteer work for firefighter charities and his readiness to help friends in need.
With a 14-year career at Raymond Fire and Rescue, Bayer rose to the rank of Captain. His loss will be profoundly felt within the fire service and the community for years to come. Both fire departments expressed their gratitude to the East Troy Fire Department and the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office for their prompt response to the crash.
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate the incident. The sheriff’s office received assistance from the East Troy Fire Department, Flight For Life, the Walworth County Medical Examiner, and the Walworth County Highway Department.
Bayer’s family, along with both fire departments, have requested privacy as they navigate this tragic loss. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased firefighter.
