Lafayette, LA (March 3, 2025) – A tragic house fire in Lafayette claimed the life of a 44-year-old man and left a 52-year-old woman critically injured early Saturday morning.

According to Lafayette Fire Department Spokesman and Public Information Officer Alton Trahan, firefighters were dispatched to the 100 block of South Orange Street around 12:30 a.m. on March 1 after a neighbor reported the home engulfed in flames.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire consuming the kitchen of the residence. As crews worked to contain the blaze, they discovered two individuals trapped in a bedroom. Firefighters were able to rescue both victims and transport them to a local hospital for treatment.

Sadly, the 44-year-old male victim did not survive his injuries, while the 52-year-old female remains in critical condition. In addition to the human loss, a dog inside the home also perished in the fire.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire and have not yet released further details.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.

House Fires in Louisiana

House fires can have devastating consequences, often resulting in severe injuries, fatalities, and significant property damage. In many cases, fires originate from cooking mishaps, electrical issues, heating equipment malfunctions, or unattended open flames.

When a fire occurs, smoke inhalation and burns can quickly become life-threatening. Victims who survive often require extensive medical treatment, including respiratory support, burn care, and long-term rehabilitation.

Fire officials urge residents to take safety precautions, including:

  • Installing working smoke alarms in key areas of the home
  • Having an emergency escape plan and practicing it regularly
  • Avoiding unattended cooking or open flames
  • Keeping electrical systems and heating equipment maintained
