Lafayette, LA  (October 22, 2024) – A tragic traffic accident occurred early Sunday morning at the intersection of Bertrand Drive and West Congress Street, resulting in the death of a local woman. The Lafayette Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 3:50 a.m. on October 20, 2024, after receiving reports of a collision.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that one of the motorists, identified as 33-year-old Molly Deshotels of Lafayette, had succumbed to her injuries as a result of the crash. Preliminary investigations indicate that Deshotels was driving northbound on Bertrand Drive when she failed to stop at a red light at the intersection with West Congress Street. Her vehicle collided with another car traveling westbound on West Congress, which was proceeding through the intersection on a yellow traffic signal. The impact struck the driver’s side of Deshotels’ vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was transported to Ochsner University Hospital and Clinic for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident. Authorities reported that no signs of impairment were observed in the other driver, although a voluntary blood sample was taken, and results are pending.

The Lafayette Police Department’s Traffic Unit is currently investigating the crash. Officers are working diligently to gather further details regarding the circumstances leading up to this fatal accident, including reviewing footage from nearby surveillance cameras.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Molly Deshotels during this difficult time.

Traffic Accidents in Louisiana

Traffic accidents remain a significant concern in Louisiana, where many individuals suffer injuries or fatalities on the road each year. In 2023, Louisiana reported a concerning number of traffic-related fatalities, often attributed to factors such as distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence. The consequences of these accidents can be devastating, impacting not only the victims but also their families and communities.

According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, many traffic accidents are preventable through adherence to traffic laws and safe driving practices. It is crucial for drivers to remain vigilant and cautious to protect themselves and others on the road.

To enhance safety and reduce the likelihood of accidents, here are some important tips for drivers in Louisiana:

  • Obey Traffic Signals: Always adhere to traffic signals and signs to maintain order on the road and prevent accidents.
  • Stay Focused: Avoid distractions such as mobile devices, eating, or engaging in conversations that can take your attention away from driving.
  • Use Turn Signals: Always signal your intentions when changing lanes or making turns to ensure other drivers are aware of your actions.
  • Drive Defensively: Be aware of your surroundings and anticipate the actions of other drivers to avoid potential collisions.
