Kokomo, IN (January 19, 2025) – A house fire on Friday night claimed the life of a resident in Kokomo, Indiana. The Kokomo Fire Department (KFD) responded to the blaze on the 1000 block of North Armstrong Street at approximately 11:08 p.m. on January 17.

According to KFD officials, heavy flames were visible at the front of the residence when firefighters arrived. Despite their best efforts, rescue attempts were hindered by extreme heat and a partial structural collapse. Tragically, the resident inside the home did not survive.

KFD Deputy Chief of Operations Steve Stackhouse expressed his condolences in a statement, noting the department’s deep sadness over the loss. The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of the family. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local authorities.

Our thoughts are with the loved ones and the community affected by this tragic incident.

House Fires and Fire Safety in Indiana

House fires are a leading cause of accidental deaths in Indiana, often resulting from electrical malfunctions, unattended cooking, or heating equipment issues. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security reports that residential fires claim dozens of lives annually, with winter months being particularly hazardous due to the increased use of heating appliances.

Residents can reduce the risk of house fires by taking preventative measures, such as ensuring smoke detectors are functioning properly, avoiding overloading electrical outlets, and practicing safe cooking habits. Regularly reviewing fire escape plans and maintaining fire extinguishers in accessible areas can also save lives in emergencies.
