Knoxville, TN (November 20, 2024) – A fatal crash occurred early Wednesday morning on I-40 East near Midway Rd when a box truck collided with a stopped Toyota Corolla. The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) is investigating the incident, which was reported at approximately 3:45 AM CST.
Authorities stated that the Corolla had come to a stop in the far-right lane of I-40 East for unknown reasons. Shortly after, the box truck, traveling eastbound, struck the rear of the stopped vehicle. The driver of the Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the box truck was not injured.
During their investigation, officers discovered assorted narcotics, including suspected heroin and crack cocaine, inside the Corolla. The presence of these substances will be factored into the ongoing investigation, as KPD works to determine the events leading up to the crash.
Traffic on I-40 East was temporarily disrupted as law enforcement and emergency crews secured the scene and began their investigation.
