Klamath County, OR (November 9, 2024) – A tragic collision on Highway 97 near Silver Lake Road last Friday claimed the lives of two individuals after their vehicle collided with a jack-knifed semi-truck. The accident occurred under icy road conditions, which contributed to the fatal crash.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP), a Cascadia Freightliner semi-truck, driven by 32-year-old Gurvinder Singh of Stockton, was traveling northbound on Highway 97 when the driver lost control due to icy conditions. The semi-truck jack-knifed, crossing into the southbound lane, causing its tractor to collide with the trailer.
As a result, a black Subaru traveling southbound slid under the semi, sustaining catastrophic damage. Both occupants of the Subaru, identified as 24-year-old Leonides Jimenez Mendoza and 43-year-old Humberta Hernandez Hernandez, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Traffic on Highway 97 was heavily impacted for approximately six hours as OSP’s Collision Reconstruction Unit conducted an investigation. The Oregon Department of Transportation and Chiloquin Fire District assisted at the scene.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.
Winter Driving Dangers in Oregon
Winter road conditions, such as icy surfaces, significantly increase the risk of accidents, especially for large vehicles like semi-trucks. Jack-knifing is a common hazard for semi-trucks in slippery conditions and occurs when a truck’s trailer swings uncontrollably, often blocking multiple lanes of traffic.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), icy roads are a leading factor in winter vehicle collisions. Drivers are urged to adjust their speed, maintain greater following distances, and avoid sudden braking during winter weather. Ensuring vehicles are equipped with appropriate tires and winter-ready equipment can further reduce risks.
The loss of life in this accident underscores the importance of winter driving safety. For families affected by such tragedies, accessing grief counseling, financial support, and legal resources can be essential steps toward recovery.
