Kentland, IN (December 4, 2024) – Two people were hospitalized following a crash involving a train, semi-truck, and passenger car at the intersection of US 41 and US 24 in Kentland, Indiana, Tuesday afternoon. The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. and involved a northbound semi, a westbound train, and a passenger car driven by a 17-year-old girl from Chicago.
According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, the preliminary investigation revealed that the semi, driven by a 36-year-old man from Addison, Illinois, had stopped at a traffic light before proceeding into the intersection. As the semi entered the intersection, it was struck by a westbound train, which pushed the semi into the passenger car. The car, which had been waiting in the turn lane, was dragged approximately 60 feet from the intersection during the crash.
Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, providing medical care to the victims. The 17-year-old girl was flown to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment. The semi driver was transported to Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka, Illinois. At this time, the severity of their injuries has not been disclosed.
The crash resulted in significant disruption, with the area being closed for approximately seven hours for cleanup and investigation. Local authorities are still investigating the cause of the collision, and updates will be provided as more details become available.
“Our thoughts are with the victims of this tragic incident, and we are doing everything we can to support them and their families,” said a spokesperson from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
