Kea’au, HI (February 3, 2025) – A motorcyclist lost his life in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 11 near the Kamehameha Schools campus on Sunday morning, according to Hawai‘i Island police.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 10:32 a.m. when three motorcycles were traveling northbound on Highway 11. A 2007 Dodge Caliber, driven by a 34-year-old woman from Mountain View, attempted a left turn from Old Volcano Rd onto the highway, leading to a devastating impact. The lead motorcycle, a Yamaha operated by a 32-year-old man from Puna, collided with the Dodge. The force of the crash caused the Yamaha to strike a second motorcycle, a 2006 Suzuki GSX-R600 ridden by a 38-year-old woman from Puna, which resulted in her losing control and sliding off the road.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found the Yamaha rider unresponsive. He was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:45 a.m. Authorities have not yet released his identity, pending notification of his next of kin. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
The Dodge driver and her juvenile passenger were transported to the hospital as a precaution, while the Suzuki rider was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The third motorcyclist, a 41-year-old man from Kona, avoided the crash and was unharmed.
Initial reports indicate that all three motorcyclists were wearing protective gear and helmets at the time of the accident. Investigators believe that speed may have been a contributing factor, though drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have played a role. The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing its investigation.
Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii
Motorcycle crashes often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the lack of protective barriers between riders and other vehicles. Contributing factors often include driver inattention, failure to yield, and excessive speed. Even when riders wear protective gear and helmets, the impact of a crash can cause life-threatening injuries.
