Kalamazoo, MI (January 20, 2025) – A fire truck responding to an early morning crash on westbound I-94 near the 83-mile marker was struck by a vehicle on Monday, January 20. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. while the fire truck from Comstock Township Fire Department was assisting at the scene of an earlier accident.
The initial crash involved a truck that veered off the roadway and collided with a power pole, prompting emergency responders to block the outside lane to secure the area. During the response, a vehicle driven by a 29-year-old woman from Battle Creek struck the fire truck. The driver reported she was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision.
The woman sustained injuries that were described as non-life-threatening and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no first responders were injured in the incident, though the fire truck sustained significant damage.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
Accidents Involving Emergency Vehicles in Michigan
Emergency vehicles responding to accidents or incidents often face elevated risks due to the unpredictable nature of roadside conditions. In Michigan, laws such as the “Move Over” law require drivers to reduce speed and change lanes when approaching stationary emergency vehicles with activated lights. Failure to comply with these regulations increases the risk of secondary collisions, as seen in this case on I-94.
Crashes involving emergency responders not only endanger lives but also disrupt vital rescue operations. It is essential for motorists to remain vigilant and adjust their driving behavior when approaching active accident scenes.
If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident involving emergency vehicles, understanding your rights is crucial. Victims may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, property damage, and other losses stemming from such incidents.
