Kaanapali, HI (November 17, 2024) – A near-fatal collision involving a motorcycle and an SUV occurred Friday evening on Honoapi’ilani Hwy (30), approximately 0.4 miles south of Kekaa Dr. The crash resulted in critical injuries for the motorcyclist and an arrest for the SUV’s driver.
According to a preliminary investigation, a white 2024 Chevrolet Suburban attempted an illegal left turn from the parking area of 2580 Kekaa Dr onto Honoapi’ilani Hwy. During this maneuver, the SUV collided with an orange 2017 KTM motorcycle traveling southbound in the inner lane.
The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man from Lahaina, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. The Suburban’s driver, a 37-year-old woman from Washington State, and her 41-year-old male passenger were not injured in the collision.
The driver of the Suburban was taken to Wailuku Police Station and arrested on charges of Negligent Injury in the First Degree. She was released pending further investigation.
Investigators confirmed the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, and the Suburban’s occupants were using seatbelts at the time of the crash. Airbags in the Suburban did not deploy. Authorities are still determining whether speed, drugs, or alcohol were factors in the collision.
Our thoughts are with the injured motorcyclist, and we hope for a full recovery.
