Junction City, KS (November 4, 2024) – A serious collision occurred Sunday night on Interstate 70, resulting in injuries to two individuals. The incident took place at approximately 6:35 p.m. on November 3, about four miles east of the K-18 highway bypass and approximately nine miles east of Junction City.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash involved a 2019 Freightliner semitrailer traveling east in the right lane of I-70. The driver lost control of the vehicle due to heavy rain, causing the rig to veer left across the median and into the westbound lanes. The semitrailer subsequently side-swiped a 2015 GMC Terrain SUV that was traveling west in the left lane.
Upon impact, the GMC veered to the right, entering the north ditch where it struck an embankment and rolled at least once before coming to rest in the ditch, facing north. The semitrailer continued across the westbound lanes and came to a stop partially in the north ditch, facing east.
The driver of the GMC, Jalen O. Williams-Flanigan, 23, and a passenger, Endia S. McNedal, 30, both from Junction City, were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of suspected minor injuries. Fortunately, both occupants of the GMC were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
The driver of the semitrailer, Sukhrob Dastanov, 37, and a passenger, Sobir Fayziev, 41, both from Mason, Ohio, were reported uninjured. The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed that both occupants of the semitrailer were also wearing their seat belts.

Crossover Crashes in Kansas
Crossover accidents, particularly on highways, can lead to devastating outcomes. These types of collisions occur when a vehicle crosses over the median into oncoming traffic, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. The conditions on the road, such as rain or ice, can significantly increase the risk of losing control, as seen in this incident.
In Kansas, it is crucial for drivers to remain vigilant, especially during inclement weather. The Kansas Department of Transportation emphasizes the importance of adjusting driving behavior in response to changing road conditions. Drivers should reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and ensure their vehicles are equipped to handle adverse weather.
