Josephine County, OR (November 1, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday, resulting in the death of a dump truck driver following a collision with a Nissan Sentra that ran a stop sign. The incident took place on Highway 199 near the intersection with Helms Road just before 12:30 p.m.
According to the Oregon State Police, the Nissan Sentra, driven by 22-year-old Joshua Chaska Patrick from British Columbia, failed to stop at the intersection and turned onto Highway 199. The vehicle was struck by a Kenworth dump truck heading northbound, causing the dump truck to roll onto its side.
The driver of the dump truck, identified as 85-year-old Uwe Jens Stehnike of Grants Pass, tragically died at the scene due to the impact. Following the crash, Patrick fled the scene on foot but was apprehended shortly afterward. He was treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained in the collision.
Traffic on Highway 199 was impacted for approximately an hour as officials conducted an investigation into the accident.
