Jersey Shore, PA (February 19, 2025) – A fatal crash occurred Monday evening on Route 220 near Jersey Shore, claiming the life of an Illinois man and leaving another driver hospitalized, according to Lycoming County Coroner Charles Kiessling, Jr.
The accident happened when 38-year-old Michael Kurelja, of Illinois, was traveling north in a Subaru Forester. His vehicle was struck nearly head-on by a Mercedes Benz ML 350, resulting in severe entrapment. Emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate Kurelja, but he was pronounced deceased at 7:48 p.m. at the scene.
Authorities stated that after colliding with Kurelja’s vehicle, the Mercedes continued traveling south in the northbound lane, striking a truck towing a trailer before rolling over onto its roof and catching fire. The driver of the Mercedes, an unidentified woman, managed to exit the vehicle but fled on foot. She was later struck by vehicles in the southbound lanes of Route 220 and transported to the Trauma Center at UPMC for treatment of her injuries.
The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation, and officials have not yet released further details on the condition of the injured woman.
