Jericho, NY (December 6, 2024) – A tragic chain-reaction crash on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) early Thursday morning left one man dead and closed the eastbound lanes for several hours. The incident occurred just after 3 a.m. between exits 39 and 41 in Jericho.
According to Nassau County Police, a Chevy Suburban was traveling eastbound when the driver, identified as 49-year-old Kenneth Young of Brooklyn, lost control of the vehicle. The Suburban overturned and struck the back of a Dodge delivery van that had been pulled over on the shoulder. Moments later, a tractor-trailer collided with the Suburban, which had come to a stop in the right lane.
Kenneth Young was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 55-year-old driver of the delivery van and the 43-year-old driver of the tractor-trailer were not injured. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The accident forced authorities to close the eastbound lanes of the LIE for several hours, causing significant traffic delays during the morning commute. The lanes were reopened by 10:30 a.m., but the impact on traffic was significant.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Kenneth Young, and we extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this tragic event.
Chain-Reaction Crashes on Major Highways
Chain-reaction accidents, such as the one on the Long Island Expressway, often lead to severe consequences due to the number of vehicles involved and the speed at which drivers are traveling. These types of accidents can cause substantial delays, especially on major highways during busy hours.
The crash also underscores the importance of careful driving, particularly on highways, where factors like speed, road conditions, and distractions can contribute to such devastating accidents. Drivers are urged to remain cautious and maintain safe speeds, especially in areas where vehicles may be stopped or slowing down.
