Jacksonville, FL (March 3, 2025) – A devastating crash on San Jose Boulevard Sunday evening claimed the life of a motorcyclist and left another person in critical condition, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The accident happened at approximately 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of San Jose Boulevard and Loretto Road. Officials report that two motorcyclists were traveling northbound when an SUV, driven by an elderly woman in her 80s, attempted to make a left turn into a parking lot from the southbound lanes.
One of the motorcyclists narrowly avoided a collision, but the second rider, a man in his mid-20s, crashed into the passenger side of the SUV. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the motorcyclist deceased.
The passenger of the SUV sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. The driver of the SUV was not injured.
Authorities are still investigating the crash and have not yet determined whether speed played a role. However, they noted significant damage to both the SUV and the motorcycle.
This accident marks the 34th traffic fatality in Duval County this year, with six of those involving motorcyclists.
Motorcycle Accidents in Florida
Florida consistently ranks among the most dangerous states for motorcyclists due to high traffic volumes, distracted driving, and unpredictable roadway conditions. With warm weather year-round, motorcycles are a common sight, but their riders face significant risks when sharing the road with larger vehicles.
Left-turn collisions, like the one on San Jose Boulevard, are among the most frequent causes of fatal motorcycle crashes. Many of these accidents occur when drivers fail to properly judge an approaching motorcycle’s speed or visibility. Unfortunately, motorcyclists often have little time to react when a vehicle suddenly turns in front of them.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are about 28 times more likely to suffer fatal injuries in a crash compared to occupants of passenger vehicles. Even when wearing helmets and protective gear, the impact of a crash can lead to devastating consequences.
For families dealing with the loss of a loved one in a motorcycle accident, seeking legal guidance can be essential. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, funeral costs, and other losses. Legal action can also help promote greater awareness about motorcycle safety, encouraging drivers to be more cautious when sharing the road.
Losing a loved one in a motorcycle crash is heartbreaking, and those affected should not have to face the aftermath alone.
