Jacksonville, FL (February 5, 2025) – A tragic crash on Interstate 295 at 103rd Street resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries on Tuesday evening. Authorities confirmed that the collision was caused by a driver traveling the wrong way in a stolen vehicle.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the crash occurred at approximately 4:38 p.m., leading to the closure of all northbound lanes for over six hours. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that a 66-year-old motorcyclist from Jacksonville was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other individuals were transported to a local hospital with injuries.
According to the crash report, the suspect was driving a stolen dark green 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck southbound in the left northbound lane of I-295 when he struck a motorcyclist traveling in the correct direction. The impact caused the motorcycle to overturn, throwing the rider from the bike.
A 33-year-old man driving a white 2021 Acura sedan, with a 33-year-old female passenger, was traveling behind the motorcyclist when the Acura struck the fallen motorcycle. The vehicle then veered into a metal guardrail before rotating back into the roadway, ultimately colliding with the motorcyclist. The suspect’s stolen pickup truck came to rest in the left emergency lane.
Following the crash, the suspect attempted to steal another vehicle but was unsuccessful. Witnesses reported seeing him flee the scene on foot before riding on the exterior of a semi-truck. FHP described the suspect as an African American male with short dreadlocks, wearing black shorts and possibly a black shirt, which he may have removed. He may have sustained injuries from the collision or an altercation.
FHP is actively investigating and asking anyone with information about the suspect to come forward.
