Jackson County, MO (March 4, 2025) – A three-vehicle collision on eastbound I-470 near the six-mile marker left one driver injured and caused significant traffic disruptions on Monday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 10:55 a.m. when a 2014 Ford, driven by an 84-year-old woman from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, changed lanes into a 2015 Ford, driven by a 43-year-old man from De Soto, Kansas. The impact caused the second vehicle to collide with a 2012 Toyota, driven by a 34-year-old man from Iowa. The Toyota then crashed into a concrete median, sustaining total damage.

Emergency responders from the Lee’s Summit Fire Department arrived at the scene and transported the Toyota driver to Centerpoint Hospital for treatment of injuries. The other two drivers were unharmed and were able to drive their vehicles away from the scene.

Elite Tow removed the Toyota due to the extent of the damage. Authorities conducted an investigation at the scene, temporarily affecting traffic flow in the area.

Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we wish him a full recovery.

Lane-Change Accidents in Missouri

Improper lane changes are a frequent cause of highway accidents, often leading to dangerous chain-reaction collisions. When drivers fail to check their surroundings before merging, they risk striking adjacent vehicles and potentially causing crashes involving multiple motorists.

Missouri law requires drivers to signal and ensure a lane is clear before merging. In high-speed environments like I-470, failing to follow these precautions can result in severe damage and injuries. Additionally, concrete barriers on highways leave little room for evasive action, increasing the likelihood of secondary impacts.

This accident serves as a reminder for all motorists to remain aware of their surroundings, check blind spots, and use turn signals to prevent lane-change collisions. Defensive driving, especially on busy interstates, can help reduce these types of crashes.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a crash caused by another driver’s actions, it’s essential to understand your rights. Seeking medical attention, documenting the accident, and consulting with professionals can provide guidance on the next steps in the recovery process.
