Izard County, AR (October 1, 2024) – A serious incident occurred on Monday when the chief deputy of Izard County sustained injuries after a suspect crashed into his vehicle. According to Sheriff Charley Melton, dispatch received a call from a local business owner around 12:40 p.m. on September 30, reporting a black Chevy truck without a license plate that was turning into their parking lot and throwing gravel onto parked cars.

In a news release issued on Tuesday, it was reported that a victim claimed the suspect’s vehicle “purposely turned toward him and hit him with his fender, knocking him back.” A deputy located the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Highway 69, south of Melbourne. The driver, identified as 27-year-old Zachoria Henry of Melbourne, refused to stop and accelerated to high speeds, heading toward Mount Pleasant.

The pursuit lasted approximately an hour, during which the vehicles traveled through Melbourne, Mount Pleasant, Zion, Sage, and near Sidney before returning to Mount Pleasant. When Henry’s vehicle turned onto Barren Fork Road, which Chief Deputy Steve Davidson had blocked off, it “did not slow down and headed directly toward Chief Davidson’s vehicle,” according to Sheriff Melton.

In an attempt to stop the vehicle, Davidson fired his shotgun just before it collided with his patrol unit. Fortunately, Davidson suffered “serious non-life-threatening injuries” in the crash. After the collision, Henry attempted to flee the scene but was later apprehended and arrested.

The Arkansas State Police are currently investigating the incident. Sheriff Melton expressed gratitude to Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens and his department for their assistance during this situation.

Our thoughts are with Chief Deputy Davidson and all those affected by this incident.

Police Accidents in Arkansas

Police accidents can have serious implications for both law enforcement officers and the communities they serve. Each year, numerous officers face dangers while performing their duties, and accidents can lead to significant injuries or fatalities. The case involving Chief Deputy Davidson highlights the risks that law enforcement personnel encounter daily while ensuring public safety.

In Arkansas, victims of police-related accidents may have legal rights that allow them to pursue compensation for their injuries and damages.
