Irvine, CA (September 20, 2024) – A serious rollover accident occurred Thursday night on the 241 Freeway in Irvine, injuring eight Orange County firefighters who were returning from battling the Airport Fire. The incident took place shortly before 7 p.m. near the Tomato Springs Toll Plaza.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was triggered by a ladder that had fallen into the lanes of the freeway. A vehicle in front of the fire truck swerved to avoid the ladder, prompting the fire truck to also swerve. Unfortunately, this maneuver caused the truck to strike the guardrail on the right shoulder and flip over.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured firefighters. Seven of the firefighters were transported by ambulance to various Orange County hospitals, while the eighth was airlifted by helicopter for medical care. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed, but the situation is serious.
OCFA Fire Chief Brian Fennessy expressed his deep concern for the injured firefighters, stating, “These are the toughest things to have to deal with. It breaks my heart. I know my team and all the rest of the firefighters in the OCFA and throughout the region and the country … are praying for our members. We just ask that anybody that’s listening to this, please do keep our firefighters in thoughts and prayers.”
