Iowa City, IA (February 13, 2025) – A Texas man died Wednesday evening after his van crashed into a semi that had been involved in an earlier accident on Interstate 80.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 34-year-old Enoch Mampuya of Holtham City, Texas, was traveling eastbound on I-80 between West Branch and Iowa City when he lost control of his Mercedes Sprinter van. His vehicle veered into the median and collided with an unoccupied semi-truck that had remained there from a previous crash.

Mampuya was the only occupant in the van and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that no one was inside the semi at the time of the impact. The crash remains under investigation, and officials have not yet determined what caused Mampuya to lose control of his vehicle.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Enoch Mampuya during this difficult time.

Highway Crashes in Iowa

Interstate 80 is one of Iowa’s busiest highways, frequently experiencing high-speed traffic and hazardous driving conditions, particularly during winter months. When accidents occur on major roadways, secondary collisions—like the one in this case—can pose additional risks to drivers and responders.

Losing control of a vehicle on the highway can result from various factors, including slick road conditions, driver fatigue, or sudden maneuvers to avoid obstacles. Ensuring safe speeds and maintaining awareness of road hazards can help reduce the likelihood of such tragic crashes.
