Indianapolis, IN (February 26, 2025) – An 84-year-old woman suffered critical injuries after a house fire broke out on the eastside of Indianapolis early Tuesday morning.

The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) responded to reports of a fire around 4:38 a.m. at a residence on Windridge Dr near 56th St. When crews arrived, they found the house fully engulfed in flames, with heavy fire spreading through the attic.

Firefighters entered the burning home and found the woman unconscious in her bedroom. They successfully rescued her just moments before the roof collapsed. Officials say the woman had closed her bedroom door, which prevented smoke from entering and may have helped her survive the intense fire.

Paramedics transported the woman to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and an investigation is ongoing.

Our thoughts are with the victim and her loved ones during this difficult time.

Fire Safety and Prevention in Indianapolis

House fires can spread rapidly, often leaving residents with only a few minutes to escape. In cases like the Windridge Dr fire, quick action by firefighters and simple precautions, such as closing bedroom doors while sleeping, can help save lives.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), house fires in the United States result in thousands of injuries and fatalities each year. In Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) responds to numerous residential fires, often caused by electrical malfunctions, heating equipment, and unattended cooking.

Residents are encouraged to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their families, including:

  • Installing working smoke detectors on every level of the home
  • Keeping fire extinguishers in key areas, such as the kitchen and garage
  • Creating and practicing a home fire escape plan
  • Sleeping with bedroom doors closed to slow the spread of smoke and flames

Fire-related injuries can be devastating, leading to long-term medical challenges and financial burdens. If you or a loved one has been impacted by a fire, seeking support and understanding your rights may be important. For more information or assistance, contact Local Accident Reports.
