Independence, MO (November 1, 2024) – A serious incident occurred early Friday morning on I-70, resulting in the death of a suspect and serious injuries to an Independence police officer. The crash took place shortly after 5 a.m. when officers attempted to initiate a vehicle stop on a white sedan traveling south on I-470 at I-70.
Details surrounding the initial stop have not been disclosed, but the driver of the sedan refused to comply and fled the scene. Officers pursued the vehicle as it sped west on I-70, taking the exit ramp for U.S. 40 Highway.
In a dramatic turn of events, the driver of the sedan made a U-turn and proceeded back up the exit ramp, driving the wrong way. This reckless maneuver led to a head-on collision with an Independence police car that was responding to assist the primary officer in the pursuit.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and attempted to save the driver of the sedan; however, the individual succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The officer involved in the collision was transported to a local hospital, where they are being treated for serious injuries.
