Immokalee, FL (November 20, 2024) – A tragic crash on Interstate 75 near mile marker 72 resulted in the death of a 39-year-old landscaper and left another pedestrian with minor injuries on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred around 10:50 AM, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Authorities identified the driver as 37-year-old Darian Camacho of Miami, who is now facing felony charges of driving without a license causing death and a misdemeanor charge for attaching a license plate not assigned to his vehicle. According to FHP spokesperson Lt. Greg Bueno, Camacho admitted to falling asleep while driving his Chrysler van, which veered onto the northbound inside shoulder of the highway.

The vehicle struck multiple cable barrier support beams before partially sliding under the barrier. It then collided with a construction sign, which became lodged in the front of the van. Tragically, the van hit the landscaper, who was laying sod along the highway. The impact projected the victim forward, leaving him fatally injured in the northbound inside lane. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Debris from the crash also struck a second pedestrian, who sustained minor injuries. Emergency crews responded promptly, and the northbound lanes were closed for over three hours while FHP conducted its investigation. This fatality adds to the growing number of traffic-related deaths in Collier County, which now stands at 48 for the year.

FHP continues its investigation into this preventable tragedy, urging drivers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid fatigue-related accidents.

Pedestrian Accidents in Florida

Florida has long been ranked among the states with the highest rates of pedestrian fatalities, a trend that continues to raise serious concerns. Collier County, with its mix of urban and rural areas, often sees roadway work zones where pedestrians, including construction workers, face heightened risks.

Fatigue-related crashes, like this one on I-75, demonstrate the dangers of drowsy driving, which can have catastrophic consequences. In work zones, pedestrians and road crews are especially vulnerable, as vehicles entering restricted areas can cause severe injuries or death. Florida’s laws require drivers to exercise caution and reduce speed in such zones, emphasizing the importance of protecting those working on or near roadways.

The tragic death of the landscaper in this incident highlights the need for improved driver awareness and stricter enforcement of traffic laws. Local safety advocates continue to push for initiatives such as expanded rest areas and public education campaigns to combat drowsy driving.
