Idaho Falls, ID (October 6, 2024) – A fierce fire broke out Saturday afternoon, engulfing a garage and a vehicle in thick black smoke on West 20th Street before spreading to an attached home.
Around 2:51 PM, a neighbor called 911 to report the fire consuming the garage and that a car in the driveway was also ablaze. Fortunately, it was reported that all residents had evacuated the adjacent home, although some individuals were attempting to re-enter the structure.
Firefighters from Idaho Falls arrived on the scene within four minutes and confirmed a working structure fire involving a single-family home. They quickly stretched attack lines to douse the flames and protect nearby homes from catching fire. Fire crews conducted an immediate search of the home and confirmed that everyone had safely escaped. A team was also assigned to the roof to perform vertical ventilation.
The fire had spread from the garage and breezeway into the attic of the home, and firefighters worked diligently to extinguish the flames. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes of their arrival.
While firefighters managed the fire, the Idaho Falls Police Department assisted with traffic control in the area to ensure safety. Idaho Falls Power and Intermountain Gas arrived to secure utilities, and Chaplains of Idaho were called in to support the displaced residents.
A total of 19 firefighters responded to the incident, utilizing four engines, three ambulances, and a battalion chief. One individual was transported to a local hospital for treatment, although federal patient privacy laws prevent the fire department from disclosing specifics about the injuries.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Idaho Falls Fire Department Fire Prevention and Investigation Division. The estimated total damages resulting from the incident have not yet been determined.
