Hurley, NY (November 6, 2024) – Emergency responders were dispatched to a reported shed fire at approximately 2:26 PM today. Initial reports indicated that while responding, the Hurley Fire Department received updated information from UC911 regarding a possible woods fire and a patient suffering from burns.
At 2:30 PM, the responding unit, Car 32, requested assistance from the Spring Lake Fire Department for a tanker to support firefighting efforts. Shortly thereafter, at 2:31 PM, Car 32 also called for the Bloomington Fire Department (NY) to provide additional manpower and a tanker.
Given the severity of the burns sustained by the patient, Empress Emergency Medical Services 701 requested the launch of a medivac helicopter, designating the landing zone at the Spring Lake Firehouse. However, Car 59-1 informed UC911 that they could not fulfill the landing zone request due to their firehouse being utilized as a polling station. Consequently, Car 32-2 requested Ulster Hose Co. #5 to establish a new landing zone at the New York State Police barracks.
The burn victim was promptly transported by Empress 701 to the designated landing zone and subsequently airlifted by LifeNet 7-5 to Westchester Medical Center for further medical treatment.
While the patient received care, firefighting crews from Hurley, Bloomington, and Spring Lake worked collaboratively to contain the fire, which threatened several residential structures in the vicinity. Fortunately, the fire was contained to approximately half an acre, and the scene was declared under control by 6:30 PM, with all units returning to service.
Our thoughts are with the burn victim and their family during this challenging time.
