Hughesville, MD (November 3, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Friday night that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman and injuries to three men following a collision involving a garbage truck on Maryland Route 231. The incident took place around 10 p.m. and has prompted an investigation by the Maryland State Police.
According to the police report, the accident began when a driver in a Ford Mustang made a wide right turn from a private driveway onto eastbound Maryland Route 231, inadvertently entering the westbound lane. The driver of the Kenworth garbage truck, who was also traveling on Route 231, attempted to take evasive action to avoid a collision with the Mustang. Unfortunately, the Mustang struck the garbage truck, causing it to rotate and overturn.
As the garbage truck overturned, it landed on a Honda Civic that was also traveling on Route 231. Hope Duker, the driver of the Honda, was tragically killed in the crash. The operator of the garbage truck, who is from Waldorf, MD, and the two occupants of the Ford Mustang, one of whom is from Salisbury, MD, sustained injuries in the incident.
Emergency responders transported all injured individuals to local hospitals, where they were treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and authorities have indicated that driver error is a contributing factor in the collision.
