Houston, TX (January 29, 2025) – A construction worker was injured Tuesday afternoon after a large piece of scaffolding collapsed in downtown Houston, according to the Houston Fire Department.
Firefighters received an emergency call at approximately 12:19 p.m. regarding the incident near Main St and Rusk St. Officials stated that the scaffolding, which stood about 10 feet high, was struck by a large piece of concrete that fell from an eighth-story window onto a construction elevator while a worker was inside.
“As he was getting out of the elevator onto the scaffolding, the concrete fell and hit the scaffolding,” said department spokesperson Brent Taylor. The impact caused the scaffolding to collapse, but the worker was able to escape from the damaged elevator before being transported to Memorial Hermann Medical Center. His condition was later stabilized.
Emergency responders confirmed that all workers on-site had been accounted for. Witnesses from 811 Main, a 46-story office tower across from the accident, reported hearing a loud noise that some mistook for thunder before rushing to their windows to assess the situation.
Debris remained scattered over the collapsed scaffolding, and police moved bystanders further away from the site due to concerns about the stability of the remaining construction elevator. The affected building, located between the JW Marriott and a parking garage, appeared vacant and may be undergoing renovations to expand the hotel.
As of 2 p.m., Houston Fire Department units had begun clearing the scene. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Construction Accidents in Texas
Construction accidents are a significant concern in Texas, where ongoing urban development and infrastructure projects pose risks to workers and bystanders. Scaffolding collapses, in particular, can result in severe injuries due to falling debris, unstable structures, or equipment failure.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), falling objects and structural collapses are among the leading causes of construction-related injuries. Employers and contractors are urged to follow strict safety protocols, conduct routine inspections, and ensure that worksites comply with federal safety regulations.
For workers injured in construction-related accidents, seeking immediate medical care and documenting the incident thoroughly can be critical in legal and insurance claims. Reports from emergency responders, witness statements, and medical records can provide necessary evidence for potential compensation.
