Houston, TX (December 17, 2024) – A tragic hit-and-run accident claimed the life of a 19-year-old male on Monday night as he attempted to cross the I-45 Gulf Freeway near the I-610 South Loop in southeast Houston. The crash occurred just before 10:00 PM and was witnessed by the victim’s brother, according to the Houston Police Department (HPD).
Authorities reported that the two brothers were attempting to cross the northbound lanes of I-45 when one tried to stop the other but was unsuccessful. At that moment, the driver of a sedan struck the 19-year-old, who tragically died at the scene.
The driver did not stop or call for assistance, continuing to flee the scene. Police have recovered a piece of the suspect’s vehicle at the crash site and are urging the driver to come forward as the investigation continues.
HPD took this opportunity to remind pedestrians about the dangers of crossing freeways. Sgt. David Rose emphasized, “There is just so much potential for danger there. There is nowhere on I-45, one of the deadliest roadways in the United States, to cross safely. That’s why we have underpasses for pedestrian traffic.”
Further details regarding why the brothers were crossing the freeway have not been released as police continue their investigation.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the deceased individual.
Hit-and-Run Accidents in Texas
Hit-and-run accidents are a significant concern across Texas, particularly in high-traffic areas like the I-45 Gulf Freeway, one of the busiest and most dangerous roadways in the United States. Pedestrian-related incidents on freeways often result in fatal consequences due to high vehicle speeds and limited visibility.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), thousands of hit-and-run crashes occur annually across the state, leaving victims and families with overwhelming emotional, physical, and financial challenges. Drivers who flee the scene not only break the law but also delay critical emergency care for injured individuals, increasing the likelihood of severe outcomes.
In cases like this, it is critical for families to seek justice and support during the aftermath of a tragic accident. Law enforcement agencies work diligently to identify and hold negligent drivers accountable.
