Horse Cave, KY (January 6, 2025) – A Kentucky State Police (KSP) cruiser was struck on the shoulder of Interstate 65 near the 57-mile marker northbound on Sunday afternoon, leaving Trooper Landon Key injured.
The incident occurred shortly after noon, as Trooper Key had just concluded working on another collision and was positioned on the outside shoulder with his emergency lights activated. A northbound vehicle failed to yield and rear-ended the KSP cruiser. Emergency responders transported Trooper Key to T.J. Samson Community Hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries and was later released.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the cruiser was cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
KSP Post 03 reported a significant rise in collisions due to adverse weather conditions, with 49 non-injury and five injury collisions logged throughout the day. Authorities have urged residents to limit travel, leave early if necessary, wear seat belts, and remain vigilant by moving over for vehicles on the shoulder.
Safety on Kentucky Highways During Hazardous Conditions
Winter weather conditions pose significant challenges on Kentucky highways, leading to an increase in accidents, as evidenced by the spike in collision reports in Hart County. Drivers must adhere to state laws requiring motorists to yield and move over for emergency vehicles to ensure the safety of law enforcement and other responders.
To minimize risks, motorists should:
- Reduce speed during hazardous weather conditions.
- Maintain a safe following distance to allow ample braking time.
- Stay off the roads unless necessary, particularly during adverse weather.
- Always yield to emergency vehicles and personnel working the roadside.
Failure to yield to emergency vehicles not only endangers responders but also carries legal penalties, as demonstrated in this incident.
If you or a loved one is involved in a traffic collision, seek medical attention, document the incident, and consult with a legal professional if necessary. Kentucky law supports accident victims in pursuing compensation for injuries caused by negligent parties.
